well, its 2011 here in greensburg, much like it is in most of the rest of the world...and things continue to change. but first things first:
my holiday season passed, shall we say, not as smoothly as planned? after looking forward to no less than three feasts prepared by some of the greatest cooks in the Omaha / Des Moines area for weeks prior to the holiday i woke up christmas eve morning resembling an uncapped fire hydrant in august. it was unpleasant to say the very least. this unpleasantness persisted for three days, thereby robbing me off all brunches, cookies, gravies, and assorted meat and poultry dishes as well as putting me in the red for the typical 5-7 holiday pounds. crushed, i was crushed. spending christmas alone on the couch with nothing for comfort or company except for a piece of toast and dozens of empty gatorade bottles is no way to spend jesus' birthday. but, i suppose, i should remember that i should be so lucky as to have a couch. anyway, christmas wasn't all i had hoped it would be, but the rest of my break in omaha more than made up for it.
joah and i returned to greensburg to find the kiowa county commons building [mentioned in the previous post] progressing nicely. pictures soon i hope. we also learned just before break that an architect was chosen for the big well museum project, something the town has been working on getting accomplished for quite a while. the museum will be going up directly adjacent to the greentown office and will house the worlds largest hand dug well, which has been a large part of the town's identity since 1888 when it was completed. it will of course be a LEED platinum facility and also house the worlds largest pallasite meteorite. that project hopes to break ground in the spring, as does the new twilight movie theater on main street. as i tell everyone, greensburg is one of the most exciting small towns i have ever had the pleasure of being in.
in local news, Steve Hewitt, city administrator and one of the men who has been at the forefront of keeping greensburg on its "green" path has resigned his position in order to take a job in oklahoma. i certainly wish him the best and commend him on the work he has done to advance the rebuilding and greening of greensburg in his time as administrator.
in other news, there is no other news. winter continues on the treeless prairie and i look forward to spring when camping trips, fishing, and sunshine will fill the days instead of tv, biting winds, and 4 pm sunsets. and beyond that, summer, when i will once again be partaking in what must be something like the 30th annual andrews family fishing trip to perrault fall, ontario for a full week of nothing but bass fishing and beautiful canadian countryside. cant wait.
